​2024 NPJ 8500 Lbs. Street Legal DIESEL Truck Rules

​(see also General Rules, which apply for all classes and competitors.)

Trucks can run Street Legal Diesel OR Outlaw Street Diesel, not both.

GENERAL RULES FOR TURBOCHARGERS over 3000 RPMs apply to this class as well.


D1. Truck must be street legal.

​Current DOT or DMV Registration, Inspection, and Insurance Card Required.

​NO DEALER TAGS.

​Vehicle must be in same physical condition as at time of inspected for highway use.

​The vehicle may be two or four wheel drive.

D2. Ballast:​ Added weight must be secured within the body of the truck.

No weights allowed in the cab. No front weights or weight boxes allowed.

Competitor must be ready to show any added weight as being secure to tech officials.

Refusal or omission to show added weight will result in D/Q or ineligibility.

​D3. Batteries: Must be securely mounted, may not be located in the driver compartment or forward of the radiator core support.

​D4. Body:​ Must be an OEM truck body, including the full bed floor.

​Body must retain all original sheet metal - Tailgate Optional.

​Flatbed or Homemade bed allowed but must cover tires and be stock length.

​Metal after-market hoods are permitted.

Fiberglass hoods are prohibited.

​The hood must be closed and securely latched while vehicle is hooked to the sled.

​The complete OEM firewall and OEM floor pan is mandatory.

D5. Brakes: Four wheel hydraulic brakes are mandatory and must be functional.

D6. Chassis: The OEM chassis is mandatory.

​The engine must be in the OEM location for the body being used.

​The vehicle must retain the full OEM chassis.

Wheel tubs, back-half conversions, tube chassis, etc. are prohibited.

D7. Cooling System:​ Radiators must be in the stock location and be at least stock size.

D8. Credentials:​ All drivers must have a valid state driver's license, inspection, registration, and insurance card in hand at time of event sign-up.

D9. Driveline:​ An OEM transmission and transfer case are mandatory.

​They must have been an option on a one-ton or smaller pickup truck.

​D10. Driver Restraint System:​ The OEM restraint system is mandatory and must be worn. Helmet must be worn. Helmet must be strapped.

​D11. Electronics: The use of on-the-fly tuning is prohibited while hooked to the sled.

​No laptop running on the passenger seat.

No adjustments to any onboard computer program while hooked to the sled.

D12 Engine:​ The engine is limited to a stock-appearing OEM make-specific compression ignition engine. Nitrous oxide and oxygen extenders prohibited.

The use of propane is prohibited - all system components must be removed from truck.

​D13. Exhaust:​ Must exit rearward of the driver's compartment.

Stacks exiting through the hood or fender well are prohibited.

​If muffler or catalytic converter have been changed from stock, then two 3/8 inch grade 5 bolts must be installed in a cross pattern within one inch of each other and as close to turbo hosing as practical.

​D14. Fire Extinguisher System:​ is permitted, it must be securely mounted.

​D15. Fuel: Pump #1 or #2 Diesel only. Soy/Bio diesel permitted. NO Off-road diesel.

​D16. Fuel Injection Pump:​ Limited to a stock-appearing OEM engine-model-specific pump only. The use of multiple high-pressure common-rail pumps is prohibited. Power Stroke engines with a single factory turbo may utilize a second HPOP. Pumps from different years in the same engine model may be interchanged.

D17. Fuel System:​ The OEM fuel tank is mandatory and must be used. Racing fuel cell are prohibited and must be removed from the vehicle.

D18. Harmonic Balancer:​ All engines subject to 4500 RPM and higher must be equipped with a harmonic balancer or damper meeting SFI spec 18.1.

D19. Hitch: ​ Must be receiver-style, reinforcements are permitted. Reinforcements must not extend forward of the centerline of the rear axle. Trick hitches are prohibited. The hooking point must be in the rearmost point on the vehicle and must be rearward of the stock location of the tailgate. The hitch must be horizontal to the ground and stationary in all directions. Bumpers may be notched or removed. The hitch height from the ground may not exceed 26 inches. The hooking point must be a minimum 3 inches wide by 3-3/4 inches long inside opening for the sled hook to fit properly.

NO CLEVISES. NO VERTICAL HITCHES.

D20. Interior:​ Complete interior including dashboard, door panels, headliners, etc. is mandatory. Two matching front seats are mandatory. Aftermarket seats are permitted, but must be fully upholstered. All factory controls (lights, signals, horn, windows, wipers, etc.) must be retained and be operative. The use of hand throttle controls is prohibited.  D21. Rear End:​ Non-OEM rear end housings are prohibited. It must have been an option in a one-ton or smaller pickup. Rear axle bolts must be covered by a cap or shield.

​D22. Steering:​ Must retain full original OEM steering gear. The vehicle must retain the original OEM power steering assistance, if it was so equipped. Additional stabilizers are permitted. Non-OEM power assist methods are prohibited.

​D23. Street Equipment:​ Complete headlight and taillight assemblies (all) are mandatory and must be operative. Complete OEM windshield and windows are mandatory. Windows must be operative per factory specifications, that is, they must open and close via OEM electrical or mechanical means.

D24. Suspension, Front:​ The upper mounting point for the strut assemblies must be in the factory location. Adjustable caster/camber pillow ball mounts are permitted. The lower control arm may be strengthened providing factory-mounting points are maintained. The lower mounting point for the strut assembly may be modified for improved caster or camber. Strut tower braces, lower tie bars, sway bars, and limit straps are permitted. Traction bars and devices are permitted.

D25 Suspension, Rear:​ OEM style is mandatory. Lowering or raising the vehicle with suspension modifications is permitted. Traction Bars and Devices are permitted. They must bolt-on only: welds are permitted for attachment to frame or axle housing. All OEM suspension mounting points must be retained and used. Sway bars, limit straps, and camber kits are permitted. The rear suspension must maintain a minimum compression shock travel of one inch compression. Stops may be adjustable. All rear suspensions must use at least one working shock absorber per wheel. Airbag spring assistance is permitted; airbag compressors must be disconnected, no in-cab controls.

​D26. Tires:​ Must be DOT street tires.

Cut tires are prohibited.

Dual wheels are permitted: Maximum of 8" tread width per tire for dual tires.

D27. Tow Vehicles:​ are prohibited.

D28. Transfer Case:​ Non-OEM transfer cases are prohibited. The transfer case must have been an option on a one-ton or smaller pickup truck.

​D29. Transmission, Automatic:​ Non-OEM transmissions are prohibited. All vehicles with engines running 4500 RPM or more using an automatic transmission must be equipped with a transmission shield meeting SFI Spec 4.1 and must be labeled accordingly. A blanket-type shield is permitted; it must be appropriately labeled as meeting SFI Spec 4.1 and it must extend from the rear of the block to the front of the tail housing with a minimum of six inch overlap where fastened. All non-blanket-type shields must incorporate two (or one, per manufacturer's instructions) 3/4 inch by 1/8 inch straps that bolt the shield on each side and pass under the transmission pan unless the transmission pan is labeled as meeting SFI Spec 4.1. All vehicles with engine running 4500 RPM or more and using automatic transmissions must be equipped with a flex plate meeting SFI Spec 29.1 and be covered by a flex plate shield meeting SFI Spec 30.1.

​D30. Transmission, Manual: ​ Non-OEM transmissions are prohibited. A clutch meeting minimum SFI Spec 1.1 or 1.2 is mandatory on all vehicles with engines running 4500 RPM or more. All manual transmissions must be clutch assisted. Sequential shifters are prohibited. All vehicles with engines running 4500 RPM or more equipped with a manual transmission must have a flywheel shield labeled as meeting minimum SFI Spec 6.3 or greater. Applications for a which an SFI Spec flywheel shield is not available may use a properly attached SFI 4.1 or 4.2 blanket that completely covers the bell housing, it must be attached to the block and extend rearward to the transmission with a minimum six inch overlap where it is fastened.

​D31. Turbocharger:​ must be in original location and must be an unmodified O.E.M. turbo for the specific year engine/truck being used as intended by the manufacturer. NO AFTERMARKET TURBO's, no ball bearing turbo's, no mounting plate adaptors or plumbing changes for higher output turbo's will be allowed in this class. Turbocharger inlet size will be checked at the tech official's discretion. Failure to remove turbo inlet hose for inspection will result in competitor ineligibility. Unmodified twin turbochargers are permitted if OEM for that year, make and model truck.  

D32. Water Injection:​ is prohibited. All system components must be removed from the truck.

D33. Wheelbase:​ The vehicle must retain the original factory wheelbase and track width.

​We will be following PPL Pro Street Diesel (2.6) rules which can be found on Page 58 in the 2024 Pro Pulling League rule book. We have several certified East Coast Pro Pulling certified tech inspectors on staff to facilitate this process.

2024 OUTLAW STREET DIESEL TRUCKS

GENERAL RULES FOR TURBOCHARGERS OVER 3000 RPM apply to this class as well.

ALL RULES ABOVE FOR STREET LEGAL DIESEL APPLY WITH FOLLOWING EXCEPTIONS:

(U1): Driver must provide proof of vehicle ownership only. Vehicle does not need to be registered or insured for highway use.

(U2): Turbocharger must be a vehicle specific stock appearing turbo with maximum round inlet size of 2.50 inches. Maximum T-3 mounting base S-300 turbo will be allowed.

All air must enter turbo through 2.50 inlet or unmodified factory MAP groove.

Bushing a larger turbo down to 2.50 is prohibited.

6.4 powerstroke engines may use factory twin turbos (Turbos must be smooth bore and factory inlet size).

No bushings, no stepped or tapered inlets allowed.

Turbo inlet hose must be removed upon request of official or competitor will be ineligible.
