All rules above for Street Legal Diesel apply with the following exceptions:
X1: Gas or Diesel Fueled Only - No water injection, No Propane, No nitromethane, No NOS.
X2: No Turbo Restrictions on size or quantity.
X3: No Injection Pump Restrictions on size or quantity.
X4: DOT tires only, no size limit including dual rear wheels, no size limit.
X5: 20" Maximum hitch height. Lowered hitch is to prevent breakage of equipment. If truck cannot lower hitch to 20", it will not be allowed to run. Period.
X6: All other Rules for Street Legal Diesel Trucks apply. Read them also. Thanks.
8000 lbs. Prostock Diesel Trucks 2018-2020
(see also General Rules, which apply to all classes and competitors.)
T1. Weight Class 8000 lbs: Hanging front weights are permitted. Ballast can extend no more than 60" from centerline of front axle. For purposes of measuring, a 1"x1"x1/4" tab is to be welded on the top of the centerline of the front axle. Ballast in bed must be secured and no ballast allowed in the cab.
T2. Engine: Block used must be a factory option in a one-ton or smaller pickup truck. Limited to 444 cubic inches (7.3 liters).
Blocks must freely circulate coolant. No hard-filled blocks.
Electric water pumps and fans are allowed. All other accessories must be powered by factory belt drive.
DUAL FUELERS ALLOWED.
Air-to-air cooler only. NO water-to-air coolers.
NO spray bars. No water injection.
Fuel injection pump limited to cylinder number specific.
(One plunger in pump allowed for each engine cylinder.)
Multiple high pressure common rail pumps or HPOPs are permitted.
P3000 and P7100 are the P-pumps that are allowed as well.
Agricultural governors are allowed.
NO sigma or 12-cylinder pumps allowed.
T3. Turbocharger: Single turbocharger only.
Driver is responsible for making compressor wheel and bore accessible to tech officials for measuring and inspection.
Compressor wheel must protrude into the bore for 1/8".
2.5 bore with max .250" MWE will be checked with a
2.550" plug and must not enter the inducer bore.
2.6 smooth bore with no map groove allowed, will be checked with
2.650" plug and must not enter inducer bore.
Must have (2) 3/8" grade 5 bolts installed 90 degrees from each other within one inch of each other and within 4" of exhaust housing flange.
Bushing a larger bore down to 2.5 or 2.6 is prohibited.
Inducer bore must be non-removable.
Turbo wheel must be no longer than 2.5" in front of and behind MWE.
Max. MWE groove of 0.250" - No MWE alterations allowed.
MWE groove will be checked with a .260" no-go gauge.
Provisions to allow air to wheel other than via the bore and MWE groove are prohibited.
Exhaust manifold/ pedestal bolt pattern max 3.5" x 2.75" (T-4 flange)
Alteration of a turbo housing to fit smaller foot and base is prohibited.
T4. Electronics: The use of on-the-fly tuning is prohibited while hooked to the sled, no laptop running on the passenger seat. No adjustments to any onboard computer program while hooked to the sled. Batteries must be securely mounted. No batteries allowed in the cab unless factory installed.
T5. Tires: Maximum 35 inches total by actual measurement.
Any DOT approved tire is allowed.
Wheel may not be wider than tire width.
NO DUAL TIRES. NO CUT TIRES. NO GROOVED OR BAR TREAD.
NO TRACTOR TYPE TIRES.
T6. Body: Must be complete with original hood, doors, and bed. All DOT glass must be in place. If bed is gutted then a bed cover must be in place. Aftermarket hood is allowed. NO FIBERGLASS BODIES.
T7. Exhaust MUST EXIT UPWARD: via a hood stack, stack in the bed, or a turn-up on the tail pipe. No exceptions.
T8. Kill Switch: Breakaway switch required mounted within 24" of hook point. Air shut off required and will be tested during tech inspection for function. A 1/4" diameter hole just above the breakaway switch for tie strap to secure ring to body is required.
T9. Transmission: Standard transmissions must have a steel flywheel and a blow-proof bell housing or SFI blanket. Automatic transmissions must have an SFI blanket.
T10. Driveshaft Loops: for front and rear driveshafts and u-joint shields are required. All u-joints must be shielded 360 degrees with 3/8" aluminum or 5/16" steel. Shields must be 6" long at minimum and centered over u-joints. The inside of the shield must not be more than 2" larger than the u-joint. Rear Driveshaft to have a minimum of 3 loops between the u-joint shields. Front Driveshaft to have minimum 1 loop between u-joint shields. All loops minimum 2" thick.
T11. Driveline: Components must be for 4x4 vehicles, 1 ton and under weight rating. NO drop boxes. NO reversers.
T12. Hitch: Maximum height allowed is 26" from the top of the hitch to level ground. (Hitch can be lower). Hitch must be a receiver type towing hitch or a special constructed pulling hitch. NO BUMPER HITCHES. Hitch must be rigid in all directions with a minimum 3" wide by 3-3/4" long opening. No vertical hitch or openings.
From point-of-hook to centerline of rear axle shall be no less than 30% of truck's wheelbase and shall not slope greater than 33 degrees to the point-of-hook. No hitch supports or adjusters shall be above the center line of rear axle if fastened to the rear housing. Pivot pin of drawbar can be no farther forward than the centerline of the rear axle. For the purposes of measuring the hitch - a 1"x1"x1/4" tab is to be welded on the top centerline of the rear axle.
T13. Suspension: Modifications are allowed, any blocked or solid suspension must be safely fabricated and securely fastened to the frame as determined by the tech inspector(s).
T14. Fire Extinguisher: Each truck is required to have a minimum 2-1/2 lbs. ABC fire extinguisher securely mounted in the cab and within reach of the driver.
T15. Driver Safety: Fire Suit (jacket and pants) required.
OEM seatbelt or equal/higher rating required to be worn.
Helmet required, must be strapped while pulling.
Leather boots or SFI type fire-proof shoes required.
T16. Brakes: Operating front brakes mandatory. Rear brakes optional.
T17. Bumpers: Trucks must have rear bumpers at least 8" in vertical height and with a maximum of 24" off the ground.
T18. Radiator and Fans: Radiator must be ahead of the motor between the grill and the engine. All fans must have a fan shroud in place.
T19. Fuel Cells: No gas tanks, fuel lines allowed in the cab unless factory installed. A fuel cell may be used to replace the original tank, must be securely mounted in the bed of the truck. If no floor is present, fuel cell must be shielded entirely by .060" steel or aluminum. A fuel cell may be mounted in front of the truck between the weight box and the grill of the truck.
T20. Axle Shields: are required, shields must be .060" thick steel or aluminum. Shields not to be mounted to the axle ends or hub bolts.
A single hole may be cut in to allow locking/unlocking of hubs with a maximum of a 1-1/2" hole.
T21. Frame: Must be a full factory frame, maximum length equivalent to a four-door long-bed truck for that year/make/model.
T22. Fuel: Limited to diesel and bio-diesel only. No alcohol, nitrous, propane, or any oxygen enhancing agents allowed.
T23. Maximum Width: of the truck may not exceed 102". (END)
2018 NPJ 8500 Lbs. Street Legal DIESEL Truck Rules
(No changes to these rules for 2020 season)

D1. Truck must be street legal.
Current DOT or DMV Registration, Inspection, and Insurance Card Required.
NO DEALER TAGS.
Vehicle must be in same physical condition as at time of inspected for highway use.
The vehicle may be two or four wheel drive.
D2. Ballast: Added weight must be secured within the body of the truck.
No weights allowed in the cab. No front weights or weight boxes allowed.
Competitor must be ready to show any added weight as being secure to tech officials.
Refusal or omission to show added weight will result in D/Q or ineligibility.
D3. Batteries: Must be securely mounted, may not be located in the driver compartment or forward of the radiator core support.
D4. Body: Must be an OEM truck body, including the full bed floor.
Body must retain all original sheet metal - Tailgate Optional.
Flatbed or Homemade bed allowed but must cover tires and be stock length.
Metal after-market hoods are permitted.
Fiberglass hoods are prohibited.
The hood must be closed and securely latched while vehicle is hooked to the sled.
The complete OEM firewall and OEM floor pan is mandatory.
D5. Brakes: Four wheel hydraulic brakes are mandatory and must be functional.
D6. Chassis: The OEM chassis is mandatory.
The engine must be in the OEM location for the body being used.
The vehicle must retain the full OEM chassis.
Wheel tubs, back-half conversions, tube chassis, etc. are prohibited.
D7. Cooling System: Radiators must be in the stock location and be at least stock size.
D8. Credentials: All drivers must have a valid state driver's license, inspection, registration, and insurance card in hand at time of event sign-up.
D9. Driveline: An OEM transmission and transfer case are mandatory.
They must have been an option on a one-ton or smaller pickup truck.
D10. Driver Restraint System: The OEM restraint system is mandatory and must be worn. Helmet must be worn. Helmet must be strapped.
D11. Electronics: The use of on-the-fly tuning is prohibited while hooked to the sled.
No laptop running on the passenger seat.
No adjustments to any onboard computer program while hooked to the sled.
D12 Engine: The engine is limited to a stock-appearing OEM make-specific compression ignition engine. Nitrous oxide and oxygen extenders prohibited.
The use of propane is prohibited - all system components must be removed from truck.
D13. Exhaust: Must exit rearward of the driver's compartment.
Stacks exiting through the hood or fender well are prohibited.
If muffler or catalytic converter have been changed from stock, then two 3/8 inch grade 5 bolts must be installed in a cross pattern within one inch of each other and as close to turbo hosing as practical.
D14. Fire Extinguisher System: is permitted, it must be securely mounted.
D15. Fuel: Pump #1 or #2 Diesel only. Soy/Bio diesel permitted. NO Off-road diesel.
D16. Fuel Injection Pump: Limited to a stock-appearing OEM engine-model-specific pump only. The use of multiple high-pressure common-rail pumps is prohibited. Power Stroke engines with a single factory turbo may utilize a second HPOP. Pumps from different years in the same engine model may be interchanged.
D17. Fuel System: The OEM fuel tank is mandatory and must be used. Racing fuel cell are prohibited and must be removed from the vehicle.
D18. Harmonic Balancer: All engines subject to 4500 RPM and higher must be equipped with a harmonic balancer or damper meeting SFI spec 18.1.
D19. Hitch: Must be receiver-style, reinforcements are permitted. Reinforcements must not extend forward of the centerline of the rear axle. Trick hitches are prohibited. The hooking point must be in the rearmost point on the vehicle and must be rearward of the stock location of the tailgate. The hitch must be horizontal to the ground and stationary in all directions. Bumpers may be notched or removed. The hitch height from the ground may not exceed 26 inches. The hooking point must be a minimum 3 inches wide by 3-3/4 inches long inside opening for the sled hook to fit properly.
NO CLEVISES. NO VERTICAL HITCHES.
D20. Interior: Complete interior including dashboard, door panels, headliners, etc. is mandatory. Two matching front seats are mandatory. Aftermarket seats are permitted, but must be fully upholstered. All factory controls (lights, signals, horn, windows, wipers, etc.) must be retained and be operative. The use of hand throttle controls is prohibited. D21. Rear End: Non-OEM rear end housings are prohibited. It must have been an option in a one-ton or smaller pickup. Rear axle bolts must be covered by a cap or shield.
D22. Steering: Must retain full original OEM steering gear. The vehicle must retain the original OEM power steering assistance, if it was so equipped. Additional stabilizers are permitted. Non-OEM power assist methods are prohibited.
D23. Street Equipment: Complete headlight and taillight assemblies (all) are mandatory and must be operative. Complete OEM windshield and windows are mandatory. Windows must be operative per factory specifications, that is, they must open and close via OEM electrical or mechanical means.
D24. Suspension, Front: The upper mounting point for the strut assemblies must be in the factory location. Adjustable caster/camber pillow ball mounts are permitted. The lower control arm may be strengthened providing factory-mounting points are maintained. The lower mounting point for the strut assembly may be modified for improved caster or camber. Strut tower braces, lower tie bars, sway bars, and limit straps are permitted. Traction bars and devices are permitted.
D25 Suspension, Rear: OEM style is mandatory. Lowering or raising the vehicle with suspension modifications is permitted. Traction Bars and Devices are permitted. They must bolt-on only: welds are permitted for attachment to frame or axle housing. All OEM suspension mounting points must be retained and used. Sway bars, limit straps, and camber kits are permitted. The rear suspension must maintain a minimum compression shock travel of one inch compression. Stops may be adjustable. All rear suspensions must use at least one working shock absorber per wheel. Airbag spring assistance is permitted; airbag compressors must be disconnected, no in-cab controls.
D26. Tires: Must be DOT street tires.
Cut tires are prohibited.
Dual wheels are permitted: Maximum of 8" tread width per tire for dual tires.
D27. Tow Vehicles: are prohibited.
D28. Transfer Case: Non-OEM transfer cases are prohibited. The transfer case must have been an option on a one-ton or smaller pickup truck.
D29. Transmission, Automatic: Non-OEM transmissions are prohibited. All vehicles with engines running 4500 RPM or more using an automatic transmission must be equipped with a transmission shield meeting SFI Spec 4.1 and must be labeled accordingly. A blanket-type shield is permitted; it must be appropriately labeled as meeting SFI Spec 4.1 and it must extend from the rear of the block to the front of the tail housing with a minimum of six inch overlap where fastened. All non-blanket-type shields must incorporate two (or one, per manufacturer's instructions) 3/4 inch by 1/8 inch straps that bolt the shield on each side and pass under the transmission pan unless the transmission pan is labeled as meeting SFI Spec 4.1. All vehicles with engine running 4500 RPM or more and using automatic transmissions must be equipped with a flex plate meeting SFI Spec 29.1 and be covered by a flex plate shield meeting SFI Spec 30.1.
D30. Transmission, Manual: Non-OEM transmissions are prohibited. A clutch meeting minimum SFI Spec 1.1 or 1.2 is mandatory on all vehicles with engines running 4500 RPM or more. All manual transmissions must be clutch assisted. Sequential shifters are prohibited. All vehicles with engines running 4500 RPM or more equipped with a manual transmission must have a flywheel shield labeled as meeting minimum SFI Spec 6.3 or greater. Applications for a which an SFI Spec flywheel shield is not available may use a properly attached SFI 4.1 or 4.2 blanket that completely covers the bell housing, it must be attached to the block and extend rearward to the transmission with a minimum six inch overlap where it is fastened.
D31. Turbocharger: Limited to stock-appearing, OEM/Factory make-specific charger only. Turbochargers from different years in the same make may be interchanged.
6.4 Power Stroke engine may utilize the factory twin-turbo configuration.
D32. Water Injection: is prohibited. All system components must be removed from the truck.
D33. Wheelbase: The vehicle must retain the original factory wheelbase and track width.
